Launiupoko Water Company, LLC (LWC) was established in 2002 by three neighboring land entities, Launiupoko Associates, LLC, Kauaula Land Company, LLC and Makila Land Co., LLC. Together, these land companies contributed capital and infrastructure to create the potable water system servicing a 6000 acre region just south of Lahaina, Hi. In June of 2003, the LWC received a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity from the State of Hawaii Public Utilities Commission to provide water service to the area of Launiupoko.

About the System

The drinking water for the Mahanalua Nui Subdivision Phase I and II , Makila Plantation Subdivision Phase I and II, Pu’unoa Subdivision Phases I and II is supplied by the existing Well 1 (State Well No. 5138-01), with Well No. 2 (State Well No. 5137-01), acting as a backup to Well No. 1. Well no. 3 is currently in the design and development stage. The public water system (PWS) number assigned by DOH for this system is 251. The daily system monitoring and monthly billings are preformed by West Maui Land Company staff.

Presently, Well No. 1 pumps water into an existing 400,000-gallon tank (Tank No. 1), which is located at the same site as Well No. 1, at an elevation of 630 feet msl. This well and tank site is located within the Mahanalua Nui subdivision. The distribution of the water from tank No. 1 services lots located below elevation 510 feet msl. A booster pump located at the Well No. 1 site, pumps the water from Tank No. 1 to the 100,000 gallon tank No. 2, located at the Well 2 site, at an elevation of 835 feet msl. Well No. 2 site is located on Makila Land Company, LLC property just mauka of Mahanalua Nui Phase III.

Water Storage:

A 400,000 gallon bolted glass-fused-to-steel control tank is located at the well site (Tank No. 1). A glass-fused-to-steel 100,000 gallon tank (Tank No. 2) is located at an approximate elevation of 835 feet msl to service Phase’s II, III and IV of the Mahanalua Nui Subdivision.

Water levels within Tanks 1 and 2 are hydraulically detected and used to control the well and booster pumps. The levels detected within Tank 2 are radio wave telemetered to the motor control building at the Well No. 1 site.


Motor Control Building:

A 34’ by 10’ single-story, concrete slab-on-grade, motor control building, with concrete masonry unit walls and concrete roof, is constructed at the Well 1 site. This building has an electrical room with state of the art electronics and a separate chlorination room.

Management:

West Maui Land staff monitors the system daily and test the conductivity and chlorine levels.  Billing and reporting are performed by the staff of WML using state of the art reading and billing systems. Pural Water Company performs the testing and reports for the department of of health.
